I have sent the study questions for the final exam to you by ANGEL mail. In a separate mailing I have also send the notes for the films we will be viewing between now and the end of the semester. I suggest that you print these and bring them to class. They include the names of the musicians in the films and will assist you in taking notes. Lydia Fish · Friday · 11–23–2007 · 09:38AM

Ten per cent of your final grade will be based on your participation in the wiki. This includes:
- Posting the topic of your fieldwork project on the appropriate link on the “Fieldwork Projects” page.
- Contributing information to other students’ projects — if you know any good ghost stories about Buffalo State College, post them on the “Urban Legends and Ghost Stories” link!
- Contributing to the “Folklore Notes from All Over” page.

Those of you who did not attend the bibliography class on 25 or 26 September will be at a serious disadvantage when preparing your preliminary bibliography. You may, if you like, attend the bibliography class with my Urban Folklore class on Thursday, 4 October at 6:00 PM. The class meets in B 108, right across the hall from our classroom. By now you should have had your fieldwork project topic approved, posted your topic on the appropriate link on the “Fieldwork Projects” page, finished reading the assigned chapters in _Fieldwork_, by Bruce Jackson (they will be covered on the midterm) and started your fieldwork.

Your preliminary bibliography is due on 10/11 October. Before starting to work on your bibliography you should read carefully the documents “Directions for your Fieldwork Project” and “Hints for Improving your Preliminary Bibliography,” with special attention to the section on your topic. You will find links to these on your class page of my website.
I have posted suggestions for bibliography on many of the links on the “Fieldwork Projects” page. Lydia Fish · Friday · 09–28–2007 · 05:05PM
My original date for handing in the paragraphs on the songs on the CD and the test on the songs was 26/27 September. However, the Monday/Wednesday class is scheduled for bibliography training on 26 September and I don’t think we can manage both. So, if no one objects, I am moving the due date for the paragraphs and the test to1/2 October. I will also move the due date for your preliminary bibliographies to 10 and 11 October.
Once your topic has been approved you need to post it on the appropriate link on the “Fieldwork Projects” page. If there is no appropriate link, just create one.
In order to complete the “participation in the wiki” requirement you will need to make a minimum of ten posts on the “Folklore Notes from All Over” and “Fieldwork Projects” pages. (Questions posted on the “Questions and Answers about the Course” don’t count!) You also need to sign your posts by placing your name in the author box and inserting four tildes (this is a tilde ~) at the end of your post. This will sign and time-stamp your post. If you just enter your name I will not pick it up in a search of the wiki. Lydia Fish · Sunday · 09–23–2007 · 05:54PM

This is a link to a blog page with a fascinating essay written on the occasion of the death of the great fighter pilot Robin Olds a few weeks ago. It is not an assigned reading, but it might help you understand the men who sing Air Force songs a little better. It also includes discussions of some of the songs on your CD.

Assignments for Monday, 17 September, and Tuesday, 18 September.
- John Guilmartin, “‘Tchepone’: A Fighter Jock Song”
- Mike Laurence, “The Thud”
Both of these documents can be found on the “Articles and Papers” page of my website.
“Tchepone” is a parody of an old cowboy song, “The Strawberry Roan.” What does Guilmartin have to say about the relationship between the two songs?
According to Laurence how do pilots’ songs reflect the relationship between men and machines in Air Force tradition?

The title page of your project should contain the following information: your name, the title of your project, a copyright notice and a word count. If any of these are missing from your title page you need to make a new one and give it to me at the next class meeting. Do not give it to the Anthropology Department secretary or put it under my office door.
Also, you should have included a signed copy of the plagiarism document that I sent you last week. I will not grade your paper until I have a correct title page and a signed document, so you need to do this as soon as possible. Lydia Fish · Wednesday · 04–18–2007 · 09:33AM

To all students:
The films we have seen in class so far since the midterm exam (The Songs are Free, In Heaven There is no Beer and Always for Pleasure) are available for review in the media reserve room at Butler Library. I noticed on the last test that the questions most likely to be answered incorrectly were the ones concerning the films, so if you missed one of these you should make a point of watching it and taking notes. Lydia Fish · Wednesday · 04–18–2007 · 09:33AM
Your fieldwork project should be between 5000 and 7500 words long. The word count should appear on the title page, with your name, the title of the collection and the copyright statement. The title page and the list of works cited should NOT be included in the word count.
Hand in your paper in a manila ENVELOPE, not a file folder. Your name, the title of your fieldwork project and your secton number (3130 for students in the Monday/Wednesday class, 3131 for students in the Tuesday/Thursday class) should be printed on the front of the envelope.
If you do not know how to do a word count in WORD, consult the Help Desk at Butler Library or one of the writing assistance centers. Lydia Fish · Wednesday · 04–11–2007 · 05:51PM

When requesting assistance from a librarian or a tutor at one of the writing centers you should take copies of the documents “Directions for your Fieldwork Project” and “Suggestions for Improving your Preliminary Bibliography.” Lydia Fish · Wednesday · 03–28–2007 · 11:40AM
I have posted the grades for the midterm exams and the CD paragraphs on ANGEL. Unfortunately the ANGEL screens for faculty and students are completely different, so if you are having trouble accessing your grades you will need to request assistance from the HELP desk at Butler Library.
Please note that ANGEL will not record letter grades in the percentage or points fields, so you will have to look for the grades on the paragraphs in the “comments” field.
The grades on the paragraphs, like the grades on the bibliographies are E (excellent), S (satisfactory) and U (unsatisfactory.) Unfortunately, many of these papers suffered from sloppy spelling, grammar, punctuation and capitalization and received low grades because of this carelessness. I strongly urge you to run your fieldwork projects through the spell and grammar checks in WORD. Those of you who are having problems with writing should make appointments with one of the several places on campus that offer assistance with papers. Lydia Fish · Saturday · 03–24–2007 · 11:09AM
If you missed class on 19 or 20 March you can review the film we watched in class, The Songs Are Free, in the Media Reserve Room at Butler Library. Lydia Fish · Thursday · 03–22–2007 · 09:23AM

Unless you have made other arrangements with me, all make up tests should be completed today (Monday) or Tuesday. I will be in my office today between one and three as well as during my office hours. Lydia Fish · Monday · 03–19–2007 · 09:52AM
We are having some problems with the wiki server. As a result you may need to enter your name in the author box every time you edit a page, after deleting a lot of junk characters. This is a known problem and should be fixed soon.
You need to be very careful about this, because if you do not sign and time stamp your posts correctly you will not receive credit. Lydia Fish · Monday · 03–12–2007 · 11:53AM
The midterm exam on Wednesday and Thursday (14 and 15 March) will include all material covered in lectures, audio visual presentations and assigned readings since the beginning of the semester. Study Questions for Midterm Exam were posted on this page on 24 February. If you have not yet taken the test on the CD you may do so during my office hours on Monday or Tuesday or after you have completed the midterm exam on Wednesday or Thursday. Lydia Fish · Sunday · 03–11–2007 · 01:00PM
As stated on the handout I gave you the first day of class (also available on your class page of my website) all work for this class is to be handed in as hard copy. Please do NOT send attachments! Lydia Fish · Wednesday · 03–07–2007 · 08:34AM
If you are having trouble finding books on your topic, try www.amazon.com. They are a great source of information and you don’t have to buy anything! Lydia Fish · Wednesday · 03–07–2007 · 08:34AM
If you missed the test on Monday or Tuesday (5 and 6 March) you may take a makeup exam during my office hours (4:30–5:30) on Wednesday or Thursday (7 and 8 March). After the class we watched the film The Stone Carvers. You can view this film in the Media Reserve Room at Butler Library. Lydia Fish · Tuesday · 03–06–2007 · 01:40PM
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS!! Please read carefully. Lydia Fish · Monday · 03–05–2007 · 09:39AM
On 28 February and 1 March the classes listened to a taped lecture, “Voices from the Frontline” by Les Cleveland. If you missed the class or if you would like to review the recording, there is a cassette copy in the Media Reserve Room at Butler Library. There is a handout that goes with the recording; ask me for a copy. Lydia Fish · Wednesday · 02–28–2007 · 07:14PM
You may bring the jewel case for your CD to the test on Monday or Tuesday and use it for help on song titles. No other form of notes, including xerox copies of the jewel liner, will be allowed. If you and another student “went halves” on the price of the CD it’s okay if both of you use it. Lydia Fish · Wednesday · 02–28–2007 · 06:30PM
Preliminary bibliographies from students in the Monday/Wednesday class were due today. Students who did not turn them in before leaving class may give them to the secretary in the Anthropology Department (CLAS B107) on Thursday or Friday. Lydia Fish · Wednesday · 02–28–2007 · 05:56PM
All work for this course, including your preliminary bibliographies, is to be handed in as hard copy. I will not grade your bibliography unless I have approved your topic, so please take care of this before handing in your bibliography. Lydia Fish · Wednesday · 02–28–2007 · 09:29AM

Do not include dissertations in your bibliographies unless you happen to find one in Butler Library. They are not available by Interlibrary Loan. Lydia Fish · Sunday · 02–25–2007 · 10:09AM
If you are working on Polish-American folklore you need to look at Polish-American Folklore by Deborah Silverman. (Who actually teaches at Buffalo State College!) Unfortunately the copy in Butler Library has been stolen, but you should be able to find copies in most branch libraries and local college libraries. If all else fails, use the copy of her dissertation in the UB library — she got her Ph.D. there and the book is based on her dissertation.
You also need to be familiar with the works of Sophie Knab (another local author) especially Polish Customs, Traditions and Folklore. Lydia Fish · Sunday · 02–25–2007 · 10:09AM
Study Questions for Midterm Exam
EVERYONE working on occupational folklore should look at the special issue of The American Behavioral Scientist (volume 33, number 3, January-February 1990) edited by Michael Owen Jones, entitled “Emotions in Work: A Folklore Approach.” It contains nine articles that I think you will find extremely helpful.
This entire journal issue is now available in full text in the wonderful new database SOCIOLOGY on the Butler Library database. Lydia Fish · Saturday · 02–24–2007 · 12:00PM
You can find articles from peer-reviewed journals in the MLA International Bibliography, Peer Reviewed Articles EZ, Project Muse, and JSTOR. If you are working with a particular occupational, interest or ethnic group you can also find articles from peer reviewed journals in SocIndex and Anthropology Plus.
Start by searching the MLA International Bibliography. If you find articles from any of the three major English language folklore journals (Journal of American Folklore, Folklore, and Western Folklore) there, you can get the whole texts from JSTOR (for articles printed before 2000) or Project Muse (for articles printed in 2000 or later). Directions for writing and turning in your paragraphs on the songs on the CD Occupational Folksongs of the American Air Force These are due on 5 and 6 March, the dates of the first test. Lydia Fish · Wednesday · 02–21–2007 · 05:32PM
If you missed class on February 5 or 6, due to our terrible weather: We watched the National Geographic film Beyond the Movie: Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring. We do not have a copy in Butler Library, but you should be able to find one at your video/DVD rental store or your branch library.
If you missed class on February 14 or 15 (more terrible weather) the lecture was based on William Bascom’s classic article “Four Functions of Folklore.” It was printed in the Journal of American Folklore in 1954 and a full text can be found in the JSTOR database at Butler Library. Lydia Fish · Wednesday · 02–21–2007 · 05:28PM
In order to fulfill the “Wiki Participation” requirement for this course you need to make at least ten posts to the “Folklore Notes from All Over” page or the links on the “Fieldwork Projects” page. This requirement is ten per cent of your final grade on the course: the difference between a B and a C. Some of you are doing very well, most of you need to get started!
Start by posting the topic of your fieldwork project and a request for information on the appropriate link to the “Fieldwork Projects” page. If there is no appropriate link you will need to create one. Please do not post your topic until it has been approved.
If you are having problems with the wiki there are several links to wiki help sites on your class page of my website. Please feel free to come by during my office hours or to make an appointment for wiki tutoring! Lydia Fish · Wednesday · 02–21–2007 · 05:28PM
I recently found this note on Air Force traditions on the 56th Fighter Wing website and thought it might be helpful. Lydia Fish · Monday · 02–19–2007 · 11:57AM
Print out the document “Improving Your Preliminary Bibliography.” You will find the link on your class page of the website.
READ the document and bring it to the next class meeting. Lydia Fish · Saturday · 02–17–2007 · 02:21PM
Next week you will be starting work on your preliminary bibliographies. This will be very difficult to do if you have yet had your topic approved!
I will not accept bibliographies or completed fieldwork projects on topics which I have not approved.
One of the requirements for your preliminary bibliography is that it include five articles from peer-reviewed journals. If you didn’t learn about peer-reviewed journals in ENG 102 there is an excellent artice on the suject in Wikipedia.
Remember before you begin your fieldwork you should have read Fieldwork by Bruce Jackson, chapters one through eight, chapter sixteen and the appendix. Lydia Fish · Thursday · 02–15–2007 · 02:05PM
Creating a link on the “Fieldwork Projects” page is not enough — you need to click on your link, create a page, and post a description of your project! Lydia Fish · Tuesday · 02–13–2007 · 11:46AM
Please use the spell check in ANGEL before sending mail. Receiving a proposal for a “feildwork” or “filedwork” project does not make me think of the sender as an outstanding student! This is a writing intensive course, remember?
Please also use correct capitalization, punctuation and grammar and sign your full name.
Thank you! Lydia Fish · Monday · 02–12–2007 · 05:48PM
I notice that several of you have created links on the “Fieldwork Projects” page and posted information about your projects there. Good on you, as my Aussie friends would say! Remember to check your page at regular intervals to see what your fellow students and I have contributed. Lydia Fish · Sunday · 02–11–2007 · 09:47AM
I have just uploaded the revised version of the syllabus to your class page of the website. This time I managed to include ALL the assignments! (I left off the assignments for the last two weeks of the semester on the version that I handed out in class.)
I would suggest that you print out the new one and throw out the one I gave you in class, just to avoid confusion later. Lydia Fish · Wednesday · 02–07–2007 · 07:47PM

The films we have seen in class so far since the midterm exam (In Heaven There is no Beer” and “Always for Pleasure) are available for review in the media reserve room at Butler Library.

If any of these are missing from your title page you need to make a new one and give it to me at the next class meeting. Do not give it to the Anthropology Department secretary or put it under my office door.

The grades on the paragraphs, like the grades on the bibliographies are E (excellent), S (satisfactory) and U (unsatisfactory.) I should have the grades for your midterm exams and for the paragraphs on the CD on ANGEL by the end of the week.
Please note that ANGEL will not record letter grades, so you will have to look for the grades on the paragraphs in the “comments” field.
Lydia Fish · Tuesday · 03–20–2007 · 02:22PM
Unless you have made other arrangements with me, all make up tests should be completed today (Monday) or Tuesday. I will be in my office today between one and three as well as during my office hours. Lydia Fish · Monday · 03–19–2007 · 09:52AM
We are having some problems with the wiki server. As a result you will need to enter your name in the author box every time you edit a page, after deleting a lot of junk characters. This is a known problem and should be fixed soon.

Anyone working on occupational folklore should look at the special issue of The American Behavioral Scientist (volume 33, number 3, January-February 1990) edited by Michael Owen Jones, entitled “Emotions in Work: A Folklore Approach.” It contains nine articles that I think you will find extremely helpful.
This entire journal issue is now available in full text in the wonderful new database SOCIOLOGY on the Butler Library database. Lydia Fish · Saturday · 02–24–2007 · 12:00PM

We watched the National Geographic film Beyond the Movie: Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring. We do not have a copy in Butler Library, but you should be able to find one at your video/DVD rental store or your branch library.

One of the requirements for your preliminary bibliography is that it includes five articles from peer-reviewed journals. If you didn’t learn about peer-reviewed journals in ENG 102 there is an excellent artice on the suject in Wikipedia. Lydia Fish · Thursday · 02–15–2007 · 02:05PM
Next week you will be starting work on your preliminary bibliographies. This will be very difficult to do if you have yet had your topic approved!
I will not accept bibliographies or completed fieldwork projects on topics which I have not approved.

Sorry, I should have been a bit more precise! If you search on the term “red corvette” you will get to a page with links to two stories. The one you want is the first one, entitled “The Fifty Dollar Porsche.” Lydia Fish · Thursday · 02–01–2007 · 04:53PM
