Dear Christie

Yes I am. I’m sorry for the delay — I’ve been having some problems with my ANGEL account and right now my left hand is almost useless, which makes using the computer difficult.

As I explained in class, the paragraphs won’t affect your grade much one way or another. I am curious about the correlation between your understanding of the songs as shown in the paragraphs and your grade on the test and I wanted to have a sample of your writing early in the semester.

If your paragraphs are markedly better than your test grade I might deduce that you are a nervous test taker and adjust your grade a bit accordingly. However, this rarely happens! Lydia Fish · Monday · 11–26–2007 · 06:46PM

Regarding my question before about Tolkien: The legend of The War of the Ring is completely based on the folklore of the First Age. It is mentioned in various parts of the trilogy, such as when Aragorn sang of Beren and Luthien. Should interviews be cited in the paper as a source? Courtney Brent? · Tuesday · 04–10–2007 · 11:48AM

Dear Courtney

PLEASE read the document “Directions for your Fieldwork Project”! (This was assigned at least six weeks ago.) Your interviews (what Bruce Jackson calls your collectanea) are the basis of your paper. The books and journal articles in your “List of Works Cited” will be used in writing your analytical essay in which you compare what other scholars have written to the material you have collected. Therefore your interviews should not be included in your “List of Works Cited.” Lydia Fish · Tuesday · 04–10–2007 · 05:46PM

I have a few questions about the field work project. First how much folklore should we be collecting? Should most of the paper be what we collected?

Second, if we’re doing our project on ghost stories/urban legends, do you want a summary of the stories, or some sort of transcript of the interview? I know on the directions for the paper you want synopses of interviews for things like customs, etc. but this seems kind of hard with stories.

Third how do we tell the difference between urban legend and events that may have actually taken place, or does it not matter as long as it’s told as an urban legend? Codie Vileno? · Wednesday · 03–07–2007 · 10:50AM

Please reread the document “Directions for your Fieldwork Project,” which can be found on your class page of the website. I do not require transcriptions of the stories you collect; detailed synopses are quite sufficient. However, you are free to make transcriptions if you prefer.

The entire paper is based on the material that you collect. The books and articles you have assembled in your bibliography are used ONLY as comparative material and as a basis for analysis of what you have collected.

You may draw conclusions from your reading as to whether or not a story is true, making such a distinction is not part of your assignment. If you run across the same ghost story on twenty college campuses, you might infer that this is a traveling story! Lydia Fish · Sunday · 03–11–2007 · 01:11PM

Yes, I am having trouble understanding a few songs as well. Could we possibly reserve monday’s class for talking about a few confusing songs on the cd and maybe a review of what you are expecting us to know for the test? Thank you David H Kleinman · Saturday · 02–24–2007 · 04:02PM

I have been asking for questions about the songs at every class meeting for the past three weeks. We can’t take the entire class period on Monday, but I shall be delighted to answer questions on any songs that you are having trouble with.

The test is very simple: I will give you a sentence or two describing the song and you will write down the title. Lydia Fish · Sunday · 02–25–2007 · 10:21AM

I am having trouble understanding a few songs. Glory Flying Regulations is definitely confusing me. I’m interpreting it as men becoming regulated and because they know right from wrong the force is shot? If that’s right, which for one is confusing :) I looked up regulation in the Wiki, which is a legal restriction promulgated by government administrative agencies and also the wild blue yonder, but only got movies? Can you give some direction please? Thank you.

I was going to send mail over angel, however I couldn’t access it over the past few hours.

Cylinda Helms · Thursday · 02–22–2007 · 09:53PM

Dear Cylinda

Please feel free to ask about any song in class! You will be helping out your fellow students — and I LIKE talking about these songs.

“Glory Flying Regulations” is typical of occupational folklore in highly structured and regulated bureaucracies — the military, the civil service and even colleges. The singer waxes nostalgic about how much nicer the work situation was before we got all these rules and regulations. Lydia Fish · Friday · 02–23–2007 · 11:36AM

Do we need 5 scholarly journal articles from Peer-Reviewed Articles EZ, or 5 total from the recommended library databases (JSTOR, Peer-reviewed Articles EZ, Project Muse, MLA International Bibliography, SocINDEX, and Antrosource)?

Sarah Traylor?

Dear Sarah

All these databases contain peer-reviewed articles. You need five articles, which may come from any one of them. Everyone needs to use the MLA International Bibliography, Peer-reviewed Articles EZ, JSTOR and Project Muse and I strongly suggest that you start with the MLA International Bibliography. Pick the five (or more) articles or chapters in anthologies that sound most relevant to your topic. Lydia Fish · Friday · 02–23–2007 · 11:36AM

Professor Fish, I was doing the readings for February 5th and 6th, and I had some trouble opening Bill Getz’s “Rhythm and Blue.” The link on the class website opened a download page and when I went to download it, it would download to 100% and then say “cancelled” and wouldn’t open. I’m using an apple computer. Is it the program or am I doing this wrong?

Jennifer Fry · Tuesday · 02–06–2007 · 06:56PM

Dear Jennifer

I’m not sure what is wrong. The article opens on my computers at home and at the office without any problems. I’ll check tonight and see if using a Mac makes any difference, but I shouldn’t think so.

The article is a PDF file, so you will need to have the most recent version of Adobe Reader on your computer. You can download it free from www.adobe.com.

If all else fails just download it from a campus computer! Lydia Fish · Wednesday · 02–07–2007 · 04:52PM

I am just wondering where exactly are we supposed to get the lyrics for the songs on the CD. I went on the immortalia website and attempted to get the lyrics but there is no search box to enter in the names of the songs and search for the lyrics. Bianca Acevedo? · 02–06–07 · 08:31AM

Dear Bianca

You aren’t “supposed” to find the lyrics for the songs — some of you may find them helpful, but they are certainly not required!

If you click on the “military” link on the Immortalia home page you will find links to dozens of scans of military songbooks. Browse through a few of them and see if anything helpful turns up. (Hint: The Raven has a lot of the songs from our CD.)

These songs are known by many different titles, but googling for a phrase like “throw a nickel on the grass” will usually turn up an amazing amount of stuff. Lydia Fish · Tuesday · 02–06–2007 · 05:23PM

I am having trouble understanding a few songs. Glory flying regulations is definitely confusing me. I interpreting it as men becoming regulated and because they know right from wrong the force is shot? If that’s right, which for one is confusing :) I looked up regulation in the Wiki, which is a legal restriction promulgated by government administrative agencies and also the wild blue yonder, but only got movies? Can you give some direction please? Thank you.

I’m using an apple computer. Is it the program or am I doing this wrong?
